Behind the scenes look at how the comics were made

Calimbo p. 15

For the last several years, I’ve taken scores of pictures of men working on construction sites, trying to figure out how best to arrange this image. After all that, I basically wound up drawing a composition that made sense to me—without any real reference. Sigh. Here’s the thumbnail. Here’s the sketch. (This  is actually a …

Studio Time 7-16-2013

I was able to finish up a Calimbo page (although I still need to letter it!). I got started on another page, as well. This is the pre-sketch sketch. Here I’m trying to figure out how things will work in real-size. Depending on how I feel, I may do some tracing when I put this …

Studio Time 6-9-13

And this is why missing a week (or two!) is bad. You get out of rhythm, and get further behind. I basically got the sketching done for the next page, but that’s a long way from completing a page in a day.

Calimbo p. 18

This is one of those layouts that seemed a lot neater in my brain. Thumbnail: sketch: Inks:   Final:   Still not sure whether the “clop clop clop” is a good idea. I decided to leave off the individual panels (gutters) as I thought the idea was clear without (or at least not any more …

Studio time 5/27/2013

After a two week hiatus, I finally got back to this page. It’s not quite how I envisioned it, and I still can’t decide on how best to handle the ceiling, but except for a few touch ups in photoshop, I’m calling it done.

Studio Time 5/5/13

I’ve been avoiding this particular Calimbo page. The forced perspective and overlapping blacks have been kind of terrifying. But I’m running out of reasons not to work on it, so I dove in. You can see that I did a full-size-figure-it-out pencil sketch first. I used to do this kind of thing more often, but …

Calimbo p. 26

I’ve been jumping around with these restaurant scene pages. This will likely be page 26. Here’s the thumbnail (with added text): As you can (maybe) see in the thumbnail, I originally planned to have more of a long shot of the two men at the table. But I decided that there wasn’t much gained with …

Studio Time 4/28

Got a late start because of car issues, but still put in about three hours. Basically finished another Calimbo page. Really need to practice more on drawing/inking folds. I like ‘em, but I can’t quite pull them off. Worked some more with the white paint, and things went pretty well; but then I decided to …

Calimbo p. 22

And another page down. Here Calimbo is reamed by his boss (for doing his job). The Thumbnail: The pencils: The inks. I wasn’t quite sure how to handle the table and backgrounds without adding a lot more lines or blacks which I thought might make the page harder to read. So I did nothing… And …

Studio Time 4/21

Finished inking the Calimbo page. Couldn’t decide if I should do something more with the desk and/ or the background. Decided to leave well enough alone, since word balloons will cover most of the dead space. Also worked some with white paint. Still suck at it. And then got started on the next page (26?). …

Studio Time 4/14

As a way to keep myself disciplined, I thought I’d publish whatever I got accomplished during my (typically) weekly studio time. This will become a Calimbo page. Hopefully, I’ll finish inking it next week.

Colimbo 23

Here’s the thumbnail: Here’s the pencils:   And here’s the finished product. I may have overdone it with the blacks. I’m not sure that everything is especially clear. I also started using white paint for clean up and some outlines. It’s the kind of thing that you can do in Photoshop, but I really want …

Colimbo 28ishortherebouts

Here’s another page that’s around the 28 area. I can’t be expected to know what page number I’m on! This page came out a little less cramped than I expected it to. That may be good, as I don’t want it to look too much like the previous page “Montressor trapped in the water carafe” …

Colimbo p. 28ish

Another week, another page. Okay, I’m not quite managing a page a week, but my pace has picked up from the 1 page/year that it was. This will roughly be page 28 once all is said and done. Here’s the thumbnail sketch: Here’s the actual pencils: And the final inked page: You can see that …

Colimbo p. 30

I think this is page 30, or maybe it’s 29. It’ll all work out in the end. Here’s the thumbnail. Here’s the sketch.   Here’s the final. I may do some more to arrange the text better. There’s a lot of words and it gets cramped. And here’s a link to the thing so far …

Calimbo p 27

Here’s the thumbnail: As you may be able to tell, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted in the top right. As I was sketching the actual page, it sorta came to me that maybe there could be a contrast between the 2 men; a contrast in colors (black and white colors) and more hands. …

Help Needed: Teleprompter

Teleprompter

This comic is basically done, but if you have any suggestions on how I could make a better title or tweak the wording, let me know. My main concern is that I’m trying to expose the hypocrisy, not participate in it. I think the comic might be misread/misunderstood.

Jan 29 2013

Colimbo p. 19

C19

The Thumbnail: The Pencils: I wasn’t quite happy with the layout, so I made it so Colimbo advances on Montressor (visually in the lower half of the page) while Montressor gets closer and smaller at the same time (upper half). I also made C’s hands more prominent, since “hands” is the point of this page. …

Calumbo p. 25

C25

First the thumbnail: Then the completed page. I think the thumbnail had more of the humor in it, but it’s done. Do you think the menu needs to say “Menu”? or is it clear what’s happening? Words may just clutter the image. The goal is to get this sucker finished this year.
