Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E: War of the Monsters vol 1 – Jeff Lemire

Monsters, fighting, explosions, now do it again! Well, that sums it up. Frankenstein’s monster (that’s right, not Frankenstein!) fights for the forces of good along with some other pathetically undeveloped monsters. When I’m saying a comic about ass-kicking monsters is uninteresting you know to watch out.

Hitman: Ace of Killers

hitman-ace

Hitman has always been one of those books that’s right on the edge for me. It’s just good enough that I keep picking up the trades when I find them (cheap or in a swap). Ennis (writer) does a decent job of characterization of the roguish Tommy (the titular hitman) and his buddy/partner Nat. Their …

American Vampire vol. I-II – Scott Snyder

Yes, Steven King wrote some parts of this but I think that was really just to grab some headlines and sales. American Vampire is a series about just that and how the good ol’ U.S. of A’s vampire ain’t ya daddy’s monster. I really like the idea of tracing the “lives” of vampires to see …

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises

It’s been eight years since the vigilante had been accused of murdering DA Harvey Dent and he seems to have disappeared, but that’s fine since Gotham is one of the safest cities around, that is until a mysterious demagogue plans to change all that in a violent communist/reign of terror revolution. To all the crying …

Unknown Soldier: Haunted House, Easy Kill, Dry Season, & Beautiful World – Joshua Dysart

Unknown_soldier

These volumes of the latest take on the Unknown Soldier impressed me. The story follows Dr. Lwanga Moses, a Ugandan raised in America who returns to his homeland in order to help the stricken denizens. Pushed too far by some ruthless criminals he snaps and triggers a murderous aspect of himself that may (or may …

Free Comic Book Day 2012

Just about ever year I forget to take advantage of FCBD get all bitter about it. And then when I do remember, like today, I wind up ever more bitter that I waited in line for 40 minutes only to get a handful of comics that I have no interest in. Go figure.

Batman: Unseen Is Better Left Unseen and Unread

Doug Moench and Kelley Jones back together again on Batman for what might be the first time in over a decade! Only, only…only it sucks. It truly sucks on several levels. I’m not sure when this story takes place, but it’s at some point where the Batman is no longer a myth, but flesh and …

The Question: The Five Books of Blood – Greg Rucka

Question

Originally titled 52 Aftermath – Crime Bible: The Five Lessons of Blood tells the story of the faceless vigilante, the Question’s, hunt for the Religion of Crime, a group that follows some sort of religion based on the supposed works of the Biblical Cain. Typical of Rucka’s work, I don’t dislike it, but I just …

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Scab – Peter Milligan

scab

The amoral, black magician Constantine’s new relationship is strained when his body is covered in a magical rash. No, there is no message of practicing safe sex here, although it might have made for a better story. Instead, the situation revolves around a union organizer who sells out and is likewise infected. Milligan attempts to …

Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score – Darwyn Cooke

Even though this is a catwoman comic and you expect to see her in costume tangling with the Batman, it actually almost devoid of such elements and is much more a straightforward crime comic as Selina assembles a crew to rob the mob (always a good plan). I enjoyed it, although I felt the climax …

Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil – Jeff Smith

Shazam_Monster_Society

I loved Smith’s Bone series and it certainly established him in the comic book world, yet I haven’t found anything else he’s written that I really liked. His take on Billy Batson, the boy who can turn into the superhuman Shazam, and the evil Dr. Sivana’s attempt to conquer the world didn’t illicit any strong …

100 Bullets: First Shot, Last Call – Brian Azzarello

100_Bullets

I like a lot of Azzarello’s work, but this first volume about a mysterious Agent Graves who gives victims information about criminals who did them wrong and an untraceable gun and bullets with which to get revenge just didn’t thrill me. The stories deal with people’s moral dilemmas over murder, but I can’t help but …

Luna Park – Kevin Baker

It’s my own fault, really. I read this too quickly and not in one sitting which is the worst way to handle this tale of a Russian ex-soldier, current mob enforcer, living by NYC’s Luna Park. The tale(s) zigzag through space and time, fact and fantasy, but always revolve around war, loss, love, and madness, …

Emerald Plight

I wanted to like Emerald Knights. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good. This is the first time Lantern Kyle Raynor (voiced in my head by Jeremy Sisto) would encounter legendary Lantern Hal Jordan (now voiced by Ryan Reynolds). This was the first time legacy meets relative newbie, outside of Kyle meeting Jordan as …

So what was Comic Con like?

For all of you wondering (and you know who you are…or do you?), I didn’t go to Comic Con but instead decided to go apple and pumpkin picking. While we can argue about it, I feel I made the better choice. However, for those of you who couldn’t make it to Comic Con and are …

Outsiders: The Hunt

Referring to my Shelfari rating, I’d have given Outsiders: The Hunt four stars, but the Man-Bat involvement, the attitude of his character about going after the Outsiders because he though they were after him seemed way too childish even for a man(-bat) who enjoyed the feeling of rebelling from his wife and family, and thus …

The Last Days of Animal Man – Gerry Conway

The Last Days of Animal Man

A rather dull take on a future wherein Animal Man is losing his ability to commune with and absorb the powers of animals and must reflect on how he lived his life. By the way, I have no problem with suspending disbelief, but if you take away someone’s superpowers then take away their ability to …

The Brave and the Bold vol. 3: Demons and Dragon – Mark Waid

The Brave and the Bold Demons and Dragon

Very mediocre stories by Waid involving characters from the DC universe. The final one of the collection revolving around the ADHD speedster, Impulse, and the wizard, Zantanna, stuck in a fantasy world wasn’t bad although I had to read the others to get to it.

Justice League Unlimited

JLU

Continuing with the Justice League cartoon, this two season series branches out to others of the DC universe. The Question episodes are simply amazing; the more carefully watched the better. The show is still terrific although the expanded cast makes character depth difficult, as does the reduced number of multipart episodes. A noted exception being …

Justice League season two

Justice_League

Borrowing a bunch of DVDs from Dan, I got proof of how many of these great cartoons about the classic DC Comic’s heroes I’ve missed (including, it would seem, a bunch of season one). I do wonder if “Terror Beyond” violates any Cthulhu copyrights, but who cares as the show’s take on D list personalities …
